Despite ending nearly twenty years ago after only a single season, fans of Joss Whedon’s beloved cult-hit “Firefly” have been able to keep up with the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew of misfits through different media, including officially licensed and canonical comic books. And “Firefly: Legacy Deluxe Edition” is a very decent way to get your hands on plenty of these comic-book stories!“Firefly: Legacy Deluxe Edition” is essentially a hardcover repackaging of Boom Studio’s two paperback “Firefly: Legacy Edition” books… which themselves were condensed reprints of Dark Horse’s five “Serenity” hardcover graphic novels. These various volumes cover a range of stories, including a delightful prequel about Shepherd Book’s origins, a tie-in story that explains what happened to the infamous “Blue Hands,” and even several full-on sequels to the theatrical film “Serenity.” While they do vary a bit in quality, the vast majority of these stories are generally quite good and add to the mythology of the series. And the artwork is typically phenomenal. Any Browncoat would do well to give these stories a read through.It is important to note however, that if you already own the five individual hardcover volumes from Dark Horse, or the two paperback “Legacy Edition” books from Boom Studios, you’re not getting anything new here. It’s the exact same stories and the exact same artwork-- except collected in a single package.There are two main reasons why this book may interest you:1- If you don’t already own these stories and would like them in a single convenient hardcover package.Or2- If you’re an insane “Firefly” collector like me, and you’ll buy every new edition of the books they release despite already owning them in different volumes and collections.If you fall into either of those two camps, then by all means, this is probably worth picking up. It’s a good quality product, and it’s nice having all the stories in one single package. Just go in knowing the contents are no different than the previous releases.My only (minor) complaint is the price tag. Considering you can get the two "Firefly: Legacy Edition" books for about $20 apiece, I think it's a little much to ask $75 for the exact same stories. But to me, that's not a dealbreaker. Because on the whole, this is still a fantastic little package.I'm giving "Firefly: Legacy Deluxe Edition" a 5 out of 5. Great collection, go get it even for the excuse of only missing one or two previously published books.The Shepherd's Tale is probably the best Firefly story ever told. Can't wait for Book Two and the new ongoing series.
